Gang Exit and Community Outreach Services (GECOS) is a new Province-wide project of Alberta Justice and Solicitor General, in partnership with the Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer and Grande Prairie John Howard offices. GECOS shall be accessible to all participants interested in exiting gangs who are either incarcerated in any Correctional Centre or residing in the community. GECOS participants are street gang-affiliated men and women of all ethnic origins between 18-35 years old, at a high risk of re-offending, and disengaged from education or legitimate employment and may experience significant difficulties in accessing community services. GECOS participant involvement is voluntary and participants must exhibit willingness and motivation to address and achieve mutually established goals. The objective of GECOS is to arrange and provide community-based targeted interventions to reduce participant contact with the justice system and to foster participant involvement with interventions that will address their needs, such as education, employment training, financial support, treatment, housing, and prosocial supports.

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver ongoing services using principles of High-Fidelity Wraparound, a team, strength-based process that facilitates supports for the participants to create long term sustainable change, and Risk Need and Responsivity and a client centered, strength-based approach
  • Create the opportunity for transformational change of the participant rather than only compliance with a series of service transactions
  • Working with the participant to create a support team and work together with the tam to plan around the needs of the participant to create an integrated plan for change
  • Assess participant to determine needs, develop positive professional relationships, work on behavioural changes and identify their individual goals
  • Maintain accurate and up to date data collection, data entry and completing of any program assessments and surveys as directed
  • Provide support and advocacy for participants and support teams as needed
  • Facilitate meetings with participant and their identified supports
  • Assist participants with completion of various applications, documents and forms until support team is created
  • Communicate pertinent information to supervisor, detectives and other staff as necessary
  • Comply with Edmonton John Howard Policies and Procedures

Qualifications / Skills:

  • Degree/Diploma in a related human services field
  • Brain Story Certification and Practice Framework
  • Minimum 2 years’ related experience working with offender population using a client centered approach
  • Extensive experience working with multiple stakeholders and partners such as Alberta Health Services, Alberta Works, Correctional Services, law enforcement agencies and community agencies
  • Previous case-management experience, including data collection and reporting
  • Critical thinking and creative problem-solving with experience in skills and techniques known to help with behaviour change
  • Knowledge of criminal justice system
  • General computer knowledge (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Professionalism within all aspects of employment and able to contribute to a strong team environment
  • Ability to work within a fast paced, high work volume program
  • Criminal Record Check, Enhanced Reliability, Child Intervention Check and Standard First Aid and CPR
  • Valid driver’s license with a safe, operating vehicle, clean drivers abstract, and must have 2 million liability insurance

Conditions of Employment:

The hours of work are Monday to Friday 8:00AM-4:30PM but some flexibility is required. The office is located in the Transition Place Building at 10010-105 Street. Program delivery is conducted in the Edmonton area, including but not limited to institutions, treatment centers, participants residence and other community settings.

 

Salary: The starting salary is $50,000/year.
