Position Summary:
Youth Housing First is part of the Housing division of EJHS and follows the Critical Time Intervention model
to work with youth who are experiencing homelessness between the ages of 16-24 years to find safe,
secure, and sustainable permanent housing. Housing Support Workers operate in partnership with a Team
Lead from EJHS to secure appropriate housing placements and provide follow-up support over a 9-month
period. The Housing Support Workers are mobile to best offer their services to youth within the
community.
Responsibilities:
• Assist youth in finding appropriate and affordable housing by collaborating with landlords and
attending viewings with the youth
• Assisting youth in the move-in process by setting up insurance, utilities, receiving furnishings, and
completing a start-up shop, etc.
• Assist youth in developing and revising individual goal plans using SMART goals
• Role model and support youth with life skills, social skills, communications skills, etc.
• Assist youth in completing referrals to additional services and promoting self-advocacy
• Transport youth in the personal vehicle as directed and approved
• Deliver services in a client-centered, strength-based approach consistent with unit philosophy
• Build collaborative relationships with youth and adapt services to meet the needs of diverse
populations
• Liaise with guardians, program partners, and other professionals
• Maintain positive relationships with community members (neighbors, visitors, landlords, etc.) and
report significant challenges/incidents to the supervisor immediately
• Maintain accurate and timely data collection, data entry, and completion of any program
assessments and surveys as directed
• Deliver services in accordance with unit and agency policies and procedures
• Participate in core agency and additional ongoing training opportunities as directed and approved
Qualifications / Skills:
• Diploma or degree in human services or a related field, degree preferred
• 2 to 3 years of experience working with youth
• Understanding and experience engaging in Harm Reduction, Strength Based, and TraumaInformed Approaches
• Strong knowledge of community resources for youth
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills
• Able to work within a team and effectively deal with crisis situations
• General computer knowledge (Microsoft Word, Outlook)
• Experience entering information into a database preferred
• Valid Standard First Aid and CPR
• Criminal Record Check and Child Intervention Record Check
• Certification in Suicide Intervention and Crisis Prevention Intervention preferred
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License, Clean Driver’s Abstract, Reliable vehicle, and $2 million liability
coverage
Conditions of Employment:
This position has an immediate start date. The hours of work are Monday to Friday 8:30 AM-4:30 PM (40
hours per week) with hours being flexible when required. This position works out of multiple locations
within Edmonton John Howard Society sites and may include remote work.
Salary:
The salary for this position is $51 000 annually.
